Apply Now for the Helen Fallon Young Communicator Award
This new award from WPC honors Helen Fallon — respected journalist, beloved Point Park University professor and dedicated member of the Women’s Press Club.
For decades, Helen has championed aspiring journalists and communicators, guiding them with wisdom, integrity and passion. This award celebrates her enduring legacy by eliminating the cost barrier for the next generation to further their education and gain recognition for their work.
About the award
There are currently two awards available: one for a journalist and one for a communications professional working in public relations, social media and other marketing positions. Up to $500 will be available for each.
Applicants must be working professionally in the field for no more than 10 years.
They may apply for this grant to help defray the following costs:
Professional organization memberships.
Conference travel.
Workshop or seminar fees related to professional development and advancement.
Freelance work expenses, such as travel to conduct research or interview sources, obtaining documents, software updates, etc.
Submission fees for journalism or communications contests that could enhance resumes.
Applicants should submit a resume and a statement (up to 500 words) via this form explaining how the opportunity aligns with their professional and personal goals, advances their career and serves audience needs. Please include the specific dollar amount you are requesting in your statement.
Applicants must be members of the Women’s Press Club. A one-year membership is $20 for new members and $40 for returning members. Click here to become a member.
Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 30, 2025, and awardees will be notified by Oct. 15, 2025.
Jim Borden Scholarship
Trib Total Media seeks applicants for the Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship. It is focused on the development of young reporters, helping them grow as journalists and as people. The scholarship will award financial assistance, a paid summer internship and, ultimately, an offer for full-time employment, to Western Pennsylvania students.
Each year, Trib Total Media will select one Western Pennsylvania student to receive up to $30,000 in scholarship funds awarded in annual installments of up to $7,500 each. The recipient also will receive a summer internship at Trib Total Media and, upon graduation, an offer for full-time employment.
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be enrolled in or (if currently a high school senior) planning to attend, an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Journalism, English Writing or Communication and remain in the approved course of study through graduation.
Primary residence must be in the Pittsburgh region, including, but not limited to Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Westmoreland or Washington counties.
Must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Must complete summer internship(s) at Trib Total Media.
